October 10, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Lincoln Stars
LINCOLN, Neb. - Lincoln Stars forward Tristan Ashbrook has announced his commitment to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), a NCAA Division I program in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).
"RPI is a first-class school with a great hockey program that's going to compete for championships," said Ashbrook. "I'm very excited to be part of that and have the chance to continue my pursuit of playing in the NHL, which is the ultimate goal."
Ashbrook, 19, made his USHL debut with the Stars on Friday night against the Muskegon Lumberjacks after being drafted 314th overall (20th Round) by the Stars in the 2017 USHL Entry Draft. The Manistique, Mich. native made his junior hockey debut with the Bismarck Bobcats of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), recording 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points with 78 penalty minutes and a -10 rating through 54 games. Prior to his time with the Stars, Ashbrook first traveled to Nebraska to join the Omaha AAA Lancers program for two seasons.
RPI is the country's oldest technological research university focusing on the sciences and mathematics as part of its core programs. The hockey program, now in its 116th season since its founding in the 1901-02 season as an independent NCAA Division I team, has won three ECAC Tournament Championships and two NCAA Championships, most recently in 1985, while making the NCAA Tournament nine times and the Frozen Four five times.
"I went out and visited RPI, and I got to know the guys out there, who were great. The facilities there are top-notch. They're working on turning that into a premier hockey place, and that's something everyone's really excited about. I asked around and checked out how people thought about RPI and the ECAC, and they spoke very highly of both. It was a really easy decision deciding that would be a great place to play."
Ashbrook becomes the 17th player on the Stars active roster to commit to a NCAA Division I program.
