Triple-A Phils Drop Pair over Weekend

March 25, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

The Triple-A Phillies saw their four-game winning streak snapped, losing to the Blue Jays 6-5 Friday afternoon in Dunedin before falling to the Jays again on Saturday, this time in Clearwater, by a score of 3-0 to fall to 5-3-1 on the spring.

On Friday, the offense had one of its finest outputs of the spring, tallying 11 hits. OF Tyson Gillies, INF Cesar Hernandez, INF Edgar Duran and DH Tyler Henson all contributed two-hit days, combining to go 8-for-14 with two runs scored. INF Cody Overbeck hit his first home run of the spring, a two-run shot, while OF Delmon Young went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run.

On the mound left-hander Jesse Biddle, the Phillies number one prospect according to Baseball America, threw six shutout frames, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. Justin Friend struck out one over two scoreless frames before Joe Savery allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits in one inning of work. Cesar Jimenez tossed the final two innings, allowing one run on one hit and two walks.

Biddle, a Philadelphia product, spent all of 2012 with Advanced-A Clearwater, finishing at 10-6 with a 3.22 ERA. Drafted by the Phillies in the first round of the 2010 draft from Germantown Friends High School, the southpaw led the Florida State League in 2012 in strikeouts (151), tied for second in wins and was third in ERA over 142 2/3 innings pitched and 26 starts. The 21-year-old was named the Phillies Minor League Player of the Month in May when he posted a 1.36 ERA over 33 innings pitched, and was named an FSL midseason All-Star.

In Saturday's 3-0 loss, Roy Halladay pitched the first four innings for the Triple-A Phils, allowing three runs in an 82-pitch outing. Relieving the two-time Cy Young award winner was lefty Tom Cochran, who pitched five shutout innings, surrendering just three hits.

Offensively the bats were quiet, mustering just three hits, two of which came from C Tommy Joseph. The third hit came from fellow backstop Carlos Ruiz, who finished 1-for-4 with a double.

The squad continues its spring schedule Monday against the Yankees at the Carpenter Complex at 1 p.m. after having Sunday off. Including Monday's game, the team plays five more contests before traveling north March 30.
