Triple-A Phillies Continue Spring Winning Streak

March 18, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

The Triple-A Philadelphia Phillies went on the road on Sunday and knocked off the Triple-A Pittsburgh Pirates by a final score of 7-6.

The Pirates got off to a hot start building a 5-0 lead through three innings. The Phillies found their groove in the top of the fourth, getting back in the game with a four-run outburst. The club added runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings to secure a fourth-straight victory.

Zach Green and Austin Bossart each drove in a pair of runs for the Phillies. Joey Meneses and Gabriel Lino also contributed RBIs. Kyle Martin had a big game at the plate with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Martin, a fourth-round pick in 2015 out of the University of South Carolina appeared in 123 games last season for Reading. In three professional seasons, Martin has 46 home runs and 187 RBIs. A 2016 post-season all-star with Clearwater, Martin is a proven power threat and should make his way to the Lehigh Valley in 2018.

Drew Anderson got the ball for the Phillies for his second appearance of the spring. Anderson went three innings before turning the ball over to Shane Watson, who struck out two in his two innings and kept the Pirates off the scoreboard. Josh Tols added an inning of relief striking out one. Yacksel Rios who earned the win in the ball game tossed two innings and struck out two which set up Tommy Bergjans to close out the ball game and record the save.

Watson was a first-round pick back in 2012 out of Lakewood High School in California. He began the 2017 season as a starter but made the move to the pen after the first couple of months. Watson thrived out of the pen improving his velocity and control. The 24-year-old made 22 appearances and had a nine game scoreless streak from 6/25-7/21. Watson only allowed 13 earned runs in relief appearances last season.

The Triple-A squad is back at the Carpenter Complex on Monday for a rematch with the Triple-A Pirates.
