Trio of Homers Can't Give Iowa Win

Iowa Cubs News Release

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Iowa Cubs (35-38) drilled three home runs, but they fell short of the Oklahoma City Dodgers (41-33) 5-4, Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Adam Warren made his first start for the I-Cubs. After a shaky first inning where he allowed two earned runs on two hits and three walks, the righty settled in to allow just one additional hit and one walk through 3.2 total innings pitched.

Oklahoma City took a 2-1 lead after one, but homers from Mark Zagunis and Jeimer Candelario in back-to-back frames put Iowa ahead, 4-3 after four. It marked the first Triple-A home run for Zagunis and the second for Candelario. The score briefly held, but the Dodgers broke open the ballgame with a four-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run long ball from Rob Segedin.

Iowa made up some ground in the seventh, taking advantage of a leadoff walk issued to John Andreoli to plate a run on a groundout double play by Zagunis. Later in the inning, Daniel Vogelbach smashed his organization-leading 13th homer of the season to pull the I-Cubs within one.

Pinch-hitting to leadoff the ninth, Juan Perez jabbed a single, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch, but Jacob Rhame retired the next three batters on strikes to secure the Dodgers' win and to take his fourth save of the season.

Munenori Kawasaki extended his hit streak to a season-best nine games with a RBI single in the first. John Andreoli, Zagunis and Vogelbach each tabbed two hits.

Iowa and Oklahoma City play two, Sunday beginning at 3:35 p.m. Follow the action on AM 940 or at www.iowacubs.com.
