The Spokane Indians appear to be taking four years of misery out on the Hops in their final regular season homestand.
The Indians manhandled the Hops for a second straight night, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to pull away for an 8-0 win at Avista Stadium Tuesday. Spokane had dropped ten in a row including five straight to Hillsboro at Ron Tonkin Field before winning the first two games of the current series by a combined 20-1.
Sal Mendez (6-4) shut down the Hops on four hits over seven innings with four strikeouts and four walks to earn the win.
Tyler Mark (5-5) pitched into the sixth inning for Hillsboro having allowed just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts before running into trouble. After a double, walk, wild pitch and an RBI single, Mark left the game and the Hops vaunted bullpen was little relief for the second straight night. Colin Poche promptly surrendered a three-run homer to two-time NWL All-Star Seth Spivey and two hits and two walks later the Indians had put another run on the board to take a 6-0 lead.
Manny Jefferson went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Hops offensively. Spokane outhit Hillsboro 11-6, including home runs by Spivey, outfielder Chad Smith and infielder Anderson Tejeda. Spivey and Smith each had two hits, with Smith adding a double to his dinger, scoring two runs with two RBI. Tejeda also scored a pair of runs.
