August 25, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Just one day after clinching their second straight International League West Division championship, the Indianapolis Indians (77-59) swept away the Rochester Red Wings (72-64) as Matt Hague launched a solo home run and collected two doubles in the Tribe's 8-5 10-Inning win on Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field.

The Indians did not rest on their laurels after clinching their second straight IL West Division title as they took home a 8-5 extra inning win to earn their ninth sweep of the season. The victory was also the Tribe's 14th in extra frames this season, five more than any other team in the International League.

IL hits leader Matt Hague put together a big day to help lead the Indians to the series sweep. The Tribe's team captain, began the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the first that gave the Indians an early 1-0 lead.

Hague then blasted his eighth home run of the season to lead off the top of the fourth inning to give the Tribe back another advantage at 2-1. Then after Rochester tied things up with two in the bottom of the ninth, Hague again came through in the clutch and began an extra-inning outburst with his second RBI double on the day, this one in the top of the 10th.

All in all, Hague finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, a home run and three RBI. With his performance, the right handed slugger took over the IL lead with 37 doubles and extended his league best hit total to 146, giving him, at the time, 10 more base knocks then any other batter in the IL.

Another top Tribe performer also improved a League-leading total as despite not earning the win, starter Kris Johnson lowered his IL best ERA to a miniscule 2.39 after allowing just two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings of work. Following Johnson, Indianapolis relievers Brooks Brown (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO), Kyle Farnsworth (1.2 IP, BB), and Atahualpa Severino (0.1 IP) all earned holds after combining for three innings of scoreless relief.

The Red Wings would, however, get to Tribe All-Star closer Vic Black, plating two scores in the bottom of the ninth to hand him his fifth blown save of the season. Pinch hitter Antoan Richardson began the final frame rally with a lead-off walk, before a single by RF Jermaine Mitchell and groundout by C Eric Fryer put runners on first and second with one out.

2B James Beresford then continued his success against Indians pitching this season by roping a single to center to plate both Richardson and Mitchell and even the score at 4-4. With his effort, Beresford finishes the season with a .412 (7-for-17) batting average and five RBI in five games against Indianapolis.

Nevertheless, the Indians put things away with four scores in the top of the 10th beginning with the RBI two-bagger from Hague that plated SS Chase d'Arnaud, who led off the frame with a single. 1B Russ Canzler also added an RBI base knock, while LF Jerry Sands and C Lucas May each lifted sacrifice flies to push the Tribe advantage to 8-4.

Though Rochester got a single score back in the top of the 10th, RHP Erik Cordier (1.0 IP, 0 H, R, ER, BB, SO) finished out the 8-5 win to give the Indians the sweep.

Following the sweep and clinch of the IL West division, the Indians now return home for their second to last homestand of the regular season. A short two-game set against the Toledo Mud Hens begins on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. with RHP Stolmy Pimentel (2-5, 3.03 ERA) expected to take the mound for the Tribe and LHP Kyle Lobstein (4-3, 3.88 ERA) scheduled to throw for the Mud Hens.

The contest will be televised on HTSN, Hometown Sports and News, available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
