Tribe Edges Wings 4-3 in Series Opener

Kennys Vargas walked twice and homered Tuesday night.

A late rally fell just short as the Red Wings dropped a 4-3 contest to the Indianapolis Indians Tuesday night at Frontier Field.

After Andrew Albers set down the Indians in order in the top of the first inning, Byron Buxton helped the Wings to an early 1-0 lead. Buxton launched a 2-0 pitch from Indians starter Frank Duncan into the Indianapolis bullpen, Buxton's fourth homer of the season.

Former Red Wing Danny Ortiz tied the score at 1-1 when he led off the top of the third with a home run into the Rochester bullpen, his fifth homer of the season.

Another former Wing, Pedro Florimon, walked to lead off the top of the fourth and advanced to third on a single by Josh Bell. After Jason Rogers struck out,Willy Garcia grounded into a forceout at second but advanced on a throwing error by shortstop Wilfredo Tovar. Florimon scored on the error to give Indianapolis a 2-1 lead. Max Moroff, followed with a double, scoring Garcia to extend the lead to 3-1.

Through five innings, Duncan had allowed just one hit after the first inning, getting help from a pair of double plays and retiring seven straight batters going into the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the sixth, Albers was relieved by Marcus Walden with one out and a runner at third base. Walden got a flyout and groundout to strand the runner and escape the jam.

Albers (2-1) worked 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and three walks with three strikeouts. He threw 95 pitches, 60 for strikes.

In the bottom of the sixth, Duncan retired Buxton but James Beresford followed with a single. Jorge Polanco drilled a triple, his fourth triple of the season. The hit scored Beresford, made the score 3-2, and prompted a pitching change with Curtis Partch taking over on the mound. Partch walked Kennys Vargas, then got Eddie Rosario to fly out to end the inning.

Duncan (1-1) pitched 5.2 innings and gave up five hits, two earned runs and a walk with two strikeouts. Duncan threw 68 pitches, 46 for strikes.

The Indians got a home run from Ed Easley in the top of the seventh, making the score 4-2.

Sean Burnett made his Red Wings debut, taking over for Walden in the top of the eighth inning. Burnett allowed one baserunner, a walk in the ninth inning.

Jorge Rondon took over on the mound in the bottom of the ninth, and allowed a one-out home run to Vargas. It was the seventh homer of the season for Vargas, and brought the Wings to within a run at 4-3. Buck Britton doubled to put the tying run at second with two outs, but Rondon retired Adam Brett Walker to end the game.

The Red Wings out-hit the Indians 7-6.

NOTES: The Red Wings added INF Jorge Polanco and LHP Sean Burnett on Tuesday, after placing OF Max Kepler (left groin strain) and LHP Dan Runzler (right oblique strain) on the disabled list...Polanco's fourth triple of the season moved him into second place behind teammate Max Kepler, who has a league best six three-baggers this season...Wilfredo Tovar went 0-for-3, ending his nine-game hitting streak...Kennys Vargas walked twice, giving him 26 for the season. Durham's Richie Shaffer had 26 walks to lead the league coming into play Tuesday.
