Tri-City Takes Care of Tigers

TROY, NY-The Connecticut Tigers (34-37) fell 11-4 to the Tri-City ValleyCats (41-32) on Saturday night. With the win Tri-City clinched the two-seed in the New York-Penn League playoffs.

With Sandy Baez on the mound the ValleyCats scored three first inning runs. Centerfielder Johnny Seawald (2-4, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB) led off the frame with his first home run of the year. Second basemen Brooks Marlow (2-4, 2 R) followed with a double and scored on an error. First basemen Dexture McCall (2-2, RBI) drove in the third and final run of the frame.

Baez went the first four and two thirds for Connecticut allowing five hits and three runs but only one was earned. He struck out three and walked three but left the game with an apparent injury to his leg.

The Tigers battled back against Tri-City starter Trent Thorton. In the second right fielder Tanner Donnels (3-4, 2B, 3B) tripled to start the inning and scored on the RBI groundout by Joey Havrilak. With the score now 3-2 and Matt Bower (2-0) on the mound first basemen Will Allen (3-4, HR, 2B, 3 RBI) tied the game with his second home run of the year.

However, the wheels feel off for the Tigers in the bottom of the inning. With two-outs Oswaldo Castillo (1-3) struck out Keach Ballard but the ball got away from catcher Franklin Navarro and Ballard reached. Following that pitch Castillo missed the strike zone with 13 of his next 14 pitches and Tri-City scored three runs with two-outs on three walks, a hit batter and an error to lead 6-3. They then scored five more runs in the seventh.

On the night both Allen and Donnels feel one-hit shy of the cycle. Allen needed a triple and Donnels a home run.

Castillo who took the loss for the Tigers as he went and one inning allowing a hit, three runs with two earned and one strikeout to go along with three walks and hit batter.

Bower while picking up the win pitched a solid three and a third innings as he allowed four hits and two runs. He struck out three and didn't walk a man.

Connecticut will play the second game of a three game series tomorrow on the road at Tri-City. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
