Portland, OR- The Tri-City Americans (20-25-2-0, 42 pts) stayed with the Portland Winterhawks (25-21-2-0, 52 pts) in a close contest, but a third period goal from Alex Schoenborn was the difference as the Winterhawks earned a 4-3 win in front of 8,033 fans at Moda Center on Sunday Night.

Portland came out strong and peppered Evan Sarthou with shots. The Winterhawks broke through 13:58 into the period as Caleb Jones scored for a 1-0 lead. The Americans responded with a power play goal with less than a minute left in the period. Parker Bowles fanned on a shot as the puck trickled to Beau McCue, slapping a shot underneath goaltender Adin Hill to tie the game at one after 20 minutes.

Early in the second, Portland retook the lead on a power play goal from Blake Heinrich for a 2-1 advantage. The Americans answered 14 minutes into the second shorthanded. Jordan Topping poked the puck away from a Portland defenseman and skated in on a breakaway, flipping a backhand shot into the net to even the score at two going into the third period.

The Winterhawks scored a shorty of their own early in the third from Dominic Turgeon to retake the lead, 3-2. But the Americans answered on the power play shortly after the Portland goal, as Topping banged home a loose puck in front of the net for his second of the night to tie the game at three. Midway through the third, Alex Schoenborn fired a shot from a tough angle over Sarthou's shoulder for a 4-3 advantage. Tri-City tried to get back into the game, but wasn't able to get an equalizer as the Winterhawks held on for the win.

The Americans were solid on the power play tonight, converting 2-of-3 chances and spending 41 minutes in the penalty box. The Winterhawks scored on 1-of-7 power play opportunities and recorded 23 penalty minutes.

Evan Sarthou made 27 saves in the loss while Adin Hill stopped 27 shots in the win.

Tri-City will return home and have some time to prepare for the Everett Silvertips (28-14-2-2, 60 pts) this Friday, Jan. 29, on CH2M Military Appreciation Night, benefiting Camp Patriot. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. at Toyota Center. The Silvertips earned a 3-2 victory in the last meeting at Toyota Center.
