Trenton Rallies for Win

(Akron, OH)- Trenton First Baseman Jorge Vazquez hit the go-ahead solo home run in the ninth inning to lift the Thunder to a 7-6 win over Akron on Wednesday night from Canal Park in Akron, OH. With the win, Trenton improved to 4-1 on its road trip.
With the game tied at 6-6 in the top of the ninth inning, Vazquez hit a one-out solo home run off of Akron Reliever Vinnie Pestano (2-2) to give the Thunder a 7-6 lead. The home run was his ninth of the season which leads the Thunder. Since being activated from the Disabled List, Vazquez is 8 x 14 with two home runs and six RBI. Thunder Reliever Amaury Sanit pitched a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the win, and stranded the tying run at second base to notch his 10th save of the season. Thunder Reliever Josh Schmidt (5-1) tossed a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win. Thunder Outfielder Edwar Gonzalez tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth inning with a solo home run off of Akron Reliever Zach Putnam.
Down 5-3, Akron (47-23) scored three two-out runs in the seventh inning to take the lead. Left fielder Nick Weglarz hit a game-tying two-run home run off of Thunder Reliever Wilkins Arias. Weglarz went 4 x 5 in the loss with three RBI and two runs. He now has seven RBI in the series. Catcher Carlos Santana followed with a solo blast off of Arias to put Akron on top 6-5. Trenton (37-33) scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Thunder sent 10 batters to the plate in the 5th inning. In the frame, Second basmean Reegie Corona and Shortstop Eduardo Nunez each had RBI singles. Designated Hitter Chris Malec connected on an RBI double to cap off the scoring in the inning.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Ryan Pope tossed five innings and received a no-decision. He has not won a game since May 13th. Pope scattered five hits and two runs. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Pope has not walked a batter in his last four appearances. Akron Starting Pitcher Jeanmar Gomez also received a no-decision. He allowed seven hits and five runs (three earned) in 4 2/3 innings. His last appearance against Trenton was his nine-inning perfect game at Waterfront Park on May 21st.
Trenton and Akron play the rubber game of their three-game series on Thursday afternoon from Canal Park in Akron, OH. RHP Kanekoa Texeira (5-4, 3.45) will start for Trenton against Akron LHP Ryan Edell (2-0, 2.28). Game time is set for 12:05 p.m.
