Trenton Falls to New Britain

(New Britain, CT)- New Britain Starting Pitcher Matthew Fox tossed seven shutout innings to lead the Rock Cats past Trenton 7-2 on Thursday afternoon from New Britain Stadium in New Britain, CT. Trenton finished its seven-game road trip with a 5-2 record.

New Britain (23-23) scored six runs in the first inning off of Thunder Starting Pitcher Ryan Pope (2-3). With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, New Britain Right fielder Rene Tosoni delivered a bases-clearing three-run triple to put the Rock Cats on top 3-0. Left fielder Matt Moses then reached on an error by Trenton First Baseman Kevin Smith which allowed Tosoni to score from third base to make it 4-0. Shortstop Yancarlos Ortiz followed with an RBI triple to increase the lead to 5-0. Ortiz scored the final run of the inning on an RBI single by Catcher Danny Lehmann. All six runs were scored with two outs in the first inning. New Britain added to the lead with a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Second baseman Brian Dinkelman off of Thunder Reliever Eric Wordekemper. New Britain Center fielder Steve Tolleson went 2 x 4 with two doubles and two runs in the win for the Rock Cats.

Trenton (22-22) scored two runs in the eighth inning to cut the New Britain lead to 7-2. Shortstop Justin Snyder walked to start the inning off of New Britain Reliever Frank Mata. Center fielder Colin Curtis followed with an RBI double to plate Snyder with Trenton's first run. Curtis advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI double by Second baseman Chris Malec. Malec finished the game 2 x 3 with a double and an RBI.

Pope lasted only one inning to take the loss. He allowed five hits and six runs (three earned). Trenton Reliever Josh Schmidt tossed three shutout innings in relief of Pope. Fox (4-2) hurled seven shutout innings to earn the win. He yielded only five hits, struck out three, and did not walk a batter. Fox has now won two of three starts against the Thunder this season, and has only allowed two earned runs in 19 1/3 innings against the Thunder this season.

Trenton returns to Waterfront Park to start a homestand on Friday night with the first of three games against the Altoona Curve (Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates). LHP Wilkin De La Rosa (1-2, 4.57) will start for Trenton against Altoona RHP Mike Crotta (3-1, 4.00). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
