Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock, AR-The Arkansas Travelers put on a show in front of a crowd of 8,885 at Dickey-Stephens Park on Saturday night as they romped against the Springfield Cardinals, 9-1.
Tyler Herb was dominant on the hill for the Travelers as he took a shutout into the ninth inning. Herb retired the first nine batters of the game, five of them on strikeouts. Herb was stellar even after the Cards scratched out a base runner as he totaled 10 strikeouts in the game and allowed just one tally, on a solo homer by Dickie Joe Thon starting the final inning. The 8.1 innings for Herb marked a career high and the 10 Ks matched his season high. He picked up the win to improve to 1-2. Springfield starter Sandy Alcantara (2-3) was charged with seven run in five innings and took the loss.
The Travs offense got going early and often against Alcantara. With two out in the first, Chuck Taylor singled to stretch his hitting streak to 15. After Ryan Casteel and Kyle Waldrop followed with walks, Tyler Marlette delivered a two run single up the middle to put the Travs on top. In the next inning, Joey Wong blasted an RBI triple and then came home on a sac fly from Gianfranco Wawoe for a four run lead.
Arkansas would pile on more in the fifth scoring three times highlighted by a two out two-run double from Marlette and a two out RBI hit from Nelson Ward . Then in the sixth four consecutive walks led to another tally before Marlette capped it with a sacrifice fly.
Marlette finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and season best five runs batted in. Joey Wong also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run knocked in.
The Travs and Cards wrap up their four game set with a Mother's Day matinee at 2:10. Right-hander Brett Ash (2-2, 4.19) starts for the Travs against lefty Austin Gomber (2-2, 3.48) for the Cardinals. It is a Family Sunday, an Operation Military Appreciation Sunday and the Travs will be wearing special edition jerseys that will be available in a silent auction. The game will also be broadcast on the Sports Animal 920, the First Pitch App, TuneIn radio and milb.tv.
