Lowell Spinners News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PENN. - After the first off-day of the New York-Penn League season, the Lowell Spinners kicked off a six-game road trip in uninspiring fashion, falling to the State College Spikes, 8-2, Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The game represented the first time the Spinners had an outcome outside of one-run in their last seven games.

Lowell (16-12) got on the board first in the third inning when Carlos Asuaje took a 0-1 offering over the right-field wall for his first professional home run to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived however, as State College (15-13) took advantage of a lead-off walk and an error by Kevin Mager on a pick-off attempt to push across a run on a Jimmy Bosco sacrifice fly, tying the game at one.

The Spikes would take the lead for good in the fourth inning. With one out, Mario Alcantara hit Mason Katz with a pitch and advanced him to second on a wild pitch. Carson Kelly followed with a run-scoring double to give the Spikes a 2-1 lead. A Luke Voit double scored Kelly and Bosco came through with a two out single to put the Spikes ahead, 4-1.

State College extended the lead with a run in the fifth and the Spinners wasted a lead-off double by Jantzen Witte in the sixth inning, stranding Witte at third base down, 5-1.

While the Spikes added two in the sixth and a run in the eighth, the Spinners could muster little for what would hold as an 8-2 final.

Asuaje paced the Spinners offense with a three-hit night, including the first Spinner home run in 11 days. David Sopilka added two hits in the loss.

Alcantara (2-2, 3.38) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks, striking out two in 3.2 innings. Dylan Chavez followed, allowing three runs on six hits in 2.1. He struck out two. Taylor Grover would allow a run on two hits, striking out two in the final two innings.

The two teams meet again Thursday night when Corey Littrell (0-0, 0.00) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch, to be followed by Simon Mercedes.
