Training Camp Recap: May 28

May 28, 2017 - Canadian Football League (CFL) - Calgary Stampeders News Release

A total of 81 players took the field on Sunday at McMahon Stadium for the first two practices of the Stampeders' main training camp in preparation for the 2017 Canadian Football League season.

The group includes 49 players who spent some time on the Stamps roster in 2016, six newcomers who have experience with other CFL clubs and 26 rookies.

At 21 years and 172 days, defensive back Tunde Adeleke is the youngest player in Stamps camp.

The elder statesman is 33-year-old offensive lineman Dan Federkeil, who is 35 days older than defensive end Charleston Hughes.

In terms of tenure with the Stamps, fullback Rob Cote leads the way as he enters his 11th season with the Red and White. Hughes and defensive back Brandon Smith are both going into their 10th seasons in Calgary.

In addition to the regular members of the roster, quarterback Chris Merchant is working out with the Stamps as part of the CFL-USports development program. Merchant is a Calgarian and former Western Canada High School student who is currently attending the University of Western Ontario.

Numbers game

A couple of veterans took the field on Sunday with a slightly different look.

All-star defensive lineman Micah Johnson has ditched No. 93 in favour of No. 4, the digit he wore with distinction at the University of Kentucky. No. 4 became available following the off-season trade of quarterback Drew Tate.

Meanwhile, second-year receiver Juwan Brescacin has swapped 83 for 82, the number he wore in his first two seasons at Northern Illinois University.

Although he didn't practise on Sunday due to injury, another numeral switch was necessitated by Quinn Smith's reassignment from the defensive line to the offensive line. Instead of No. 90, Smith will now wear No. 69.

Quotable

Head coach Dave Dickenson: "It was a good practice. Guys were definitely competing and flying around. It's probably one of the sharper first practices I've seen in the last few years. I'm trying to condition them and getting them ready to understand that, in Calgary, you've got some thin air. Overall, it was a great start."

Transactions

The Stamps added three rookie internationals to the roster on Sunday - defensive back Patrick Levels, linebacker Jameer Thurman and offensive lineman Antoine McClain.

Released were international receiver Darius Davis, international linebacker D'Nerius Antoine and international offensive lineman Nick Ritcher.

National defensive lineman Junior Turner and national offensive lineman Quinn Smith were placed on the injury list.

Tomorrow's schedule

There are two more practices on Monday - the morning session runs from 9:05 a.m. to approximately 10:50 a.m. while the afternoon practice goes from 4:20 p.m. to approximately 6:05 p.m. As per league policy, ENG cameras will be permitted to shoot from approximately 9:05 to 9:25 a.m. during morning session and from 4:20 to 4:50 p.m. during afternoon practice.
