Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - David Christiansen's smacked a two-run triple and scored on a suicide squeeze and Christian Friedrich fired six innings of shutout ball as the Asheville Tourists edged the Charleston RiverDogs, 3-1, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night in front of 2,051 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, Asheville improves to 13-13 while Charleston drops its fourth consecutive game - the longest losing skid of the season - and falls to 13-14, despite another excellent outing from RiverDogs pitcher D.J. Mitchell.

The Tourists pushed three runs across in the sixth to break a scoreless tie as Jimmy Cesario singled, Ryan Peisel reached on an error and both scored on Christiansen's two-run triple. The third run came when Christiansen scored on Erik Wetzel's perfectly executed suicide squeeze with one out.

Charleston narrowed the gap to 3-1 in the seventh when Melky Mesa slapped a leadoff single, stole second and advanced to third when catcher Jordan Pacheco's throw bounced into center for an error. Neall French then drove Mesa home with a groundout to short.

Friedrich (3-0), who silenced RiverDogs batters for six shutout innings, dispensed four hits and struck out 10. It marked the second time this season that Asheville's southpaw collected 10 strikeouts against Charleston.

Reliever Adam Jorgensen recorded his fourth save of the campaign as he pitched an uneventful ninth inning, walking one and striking out one.

Mitchell (4-1) suffered a hard-luck loss for his first defeat of the season. The former Clemson righty was charged with three runs -- only one earned -- on seven hits and struck out eight in a season-high seven innings on the mound.

Asheville amassed seven base knocks on the night, led by leadoff hitter Scott Robinson's two while five different RiverDogs registered hits.

Charleston and Asheville will play Game 2 of a four-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The RiverDogs will send right-hander Hector Noesi (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the hill while the Tourists counter with righty Dan Houston (0-1, 4.41 ERA).
