May 19, 2017 - South Atlantic League (SAL) - Asheville Tourists
GREENVILLE--The Asheville Tourists have had one of the best bullpens in the South Atlantic League this year. On Friday night, that bullpen was given the chance to shine once more--and they did not disappoint. Asheville jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on to beat the Greenville Drive by a final score of 6-5.
The Tourists pounced on Drive starter Logan Boyd with five first inning runs. Colton Welker doubled in Jose Gomez and Willie Abreu doubled in Welker. Luis Castro added an RBI single and later scored on a double steal.
Boyd settled in following the rough first inning and gave his team a chance to swing their way back into the game. Greenville scored once in the second, added another in the third, and plated two in the fourth; all off starter Antonio Santos.
Warren Schaeffer went to the bullpen with a 5-4 lead and Matt Dennis chewed up 2.2 innings. Dennis was tremendous and allowed only one base runner; a bunt single by Chris Madera. Greenville took advantage of a throwing error to score Madera and tie the game.
Asheville answered right back. Vince Fernandez tripled with two outs in the eighth inning and scored on a wild pitch to put the Tourists in front by a run. Julian Fernandez struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth and JD Hammer picked up a pair of strikeouts as part of a perfect ninth inning to seal the win.
Both teams will be back at it against each other on Saturday night with a 7:05pm first pitch.
