Tourists Finish Road Trip with 9-3 Win in Augusta

May 7, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

Augusta, GA--The Asheville Tourists wrapped up their seven-game road trip with a victory Tuesday night over the Augusta GreenJackets. Asheville used a seven-run first inning to pull away and coast to a 9-3 win at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The Tourists started the game with three consecutive doubles, followed by a walk, then a fourth double to really put the pressure on former UNC-Asheville and current GreenJackets pitcher Justin Schumer. Asheville sent 12 batters to the plate in the first and both Kyle Von Tungeln and David Dahl reached base twice in the frame. Dahl had to leave the game following his second at-bat after suffering a right leg injury sprinting down the first base line.

Asheville's pitching throughout the game was just as impressive as their first inning offense. Eddie Butler tossed six innings of near hitless baseball. The only hit he allowed was a third inning groundball that was originally ruled an error but later changed to an infield single. Augusta managed another infield single with two outs in the eighth and plated some late runs.

Tom Murphy's RBI double in the fourth inning extended the catcher's hitting streak to 15 consecutive games. Murphy has the longest hitting streak in the South Atlantic League this season.

The Tourists finished their road trip 3-4 and will open a seven-game homestand on Thursday when the Kannapolis Intimidators come to town. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.

Asheville is currently just 1.5 games back of the first place Savannah Sand Gnats.
