Tourists Drop Second Straight To Power

Asheville fell 8-5 to West Virginia Thursday night in front of 3,202 fans at McCormick Field. The Power took advantage of some mental mistakes by the Tourists and held on to take a 2-1 series lead.

The Tourists plated the game's first run in their initial at bat. Delta Cleary Jr. drew a walk, stole second, went to third on a groundout, and came home on Harold Riggins' sacrifice fly. Playing small ball paid off but the Power's left fielder Willy Garcia answered with a two-run Home Run in the second.

West Virginia added two more in the fourth. Jose Osuna led off the frame with a double while Dan Gamache and Carlos Mesa tabbed RBI base knocks. Asheville responded with one in the bottom of the fourth. Brian Humphries this time conncected with a sacrifice fly to score Jordan Ribera.

The teams each scored twice in the fifth to make it a 6-4 contest after five. The Power received an RBI single from Kirk Singer and had a run come home on Tourists catcher Ryan Casteel's throwing error. The Tourists plated one on an errant throw from Gamache and a Riggins double down the line in left.

For the third straight inning, the visitors posted a two-spot on the scoreboard; extending their lead to 8-4 after six. This time it was Alen Hansen delivering a two-run double to right-center off Tourists reliever Taylor Reid.

Riggins led off the eighth for Asheville and he left the park for his fifth round tripper of the year. The Tourists were unable to mount a threat the rest of the way.

Nick Kingham (1-1, 8.24) earned the win for the Power by pitching five. He ran into trouble in the fifth but was able to finish the inning without relinquishing the lead. Alex Gillingham (2-2, 6.08) was handed the loss as he was touched up for six runs on ten hits in five innings of work.
