Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - Tyler Mahle allowed one run over his seven innings in the Daytona Tortugas 4-1 win over the Fort Myers Miracle Monday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Mahle matched his career-high with nine strikeouts, as he became the first Tortuga starter to go seven innings.
Mahle's only blemish came in the second inning, when he hit Chris Paul with a pitch to start the frame. Paul would come down to score the first run of the game two batters later on an Alex Real groundout to second.
Daytona would immediately respond in the home half, when Angelo Gumbs began the inning by drawing a walk. The outfielder then stole second and came around with the Tortugas first run two batters later, when Blake Butler lifted a fly ball to right field.
With Mahle locked in, Daytona would take their first lead in the bottom of the fifth. Taylor Sparks started the trouble with a leadoff double to left field. He advanced to third on a Butler ground ball and scored on a Jonathan Reynoso groundout to first.
The Tortugas eventually add some insurance in the last of the eighth against RHP Luke Bard, younger brother of former big leaguer Daniel. Reynoso led off with a single and was sacrified to second by a Blake Trahan sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Arisitides Aquino lifted a two-out single to left to drive in his second run of the year. The very next batter, Gumbs, would add on with a triple into right field to give Daytona the 4-1 lead.
After Mahle, the Tortugas bullpen shut the door on the Miracle. Nick Howard and Jimmy Herget combined to retire all six batters they faced.
Mahle (1-0) allowed a run on three hits over his seven innings, while striking out nine. LHP Randy Rosario (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings. Herget notched his first save of the year.
The Tortugas begin a six-game road trip Tuesday night in Clearwater against the Threshers. RHP Keury Mella (0-2, 5.00 ERA) goes for Daytona, against RHP Tom Eshelman (0-1, 0.75). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. with the Chili's pre-game show beginning at 6:45 P.M.
Notes: Taylor Sparks went 6-for-14 in the series after a 2-for-27 start to his season. He recorded a hit in all four games...Nick Howard has faced the minimum in each of his last two outings...It was career save #16 for Herget...Mahle matched his career-high with nine strikeouts, a total he has now reached four times - all in his last 22 starts.
