Daytona Tortugas News Release

Jupiter, FL - RHP Tyler Mahle spun a no-hitter in a 4-0 Daytona Tortugas victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The right-hander faced the minimum in his nine innings of work and struck out six. His only blemish was a hit batter, when he plunked Brian Schales with a pitch in the bottom of the third, keeping it from a perfect game.

Daytona's offense handed Mahle (8-3) a two-run lead after their first look at Jupiter's LHP James Buckelew (2-1). With a pair of runners on and one out, Angelo Gumbs reached on a single and a throwing error by Hammerheads' shortstop Justin Bone, allowing Blake Trahan to score from second on the play. The next batter, Gavin LaValley, bounced into an RBI groundout to score Arisitides Aquino for the 2-0 lead.

That's all Mahle would need. The right-hander dominated Jupiter's lineup, retiring the first seven batters he faced before he bruised Schales with a pitch. However, Mahle quickly worked around it by getting Justin Bone to ground into an inning-ending double play. After that, Mahle proceeded to retire his final 18 batters, striking out six, en route to the first no-hitter in the FSL this season.

Aquino added a two-run homerun in the top of the eighth for his ninth blast of the season, scoring Trahan, who was hit by a pitch, to give the game its final 4-0 score.

It was the first no-hitter for a Daytona pitcher since July 8, 2013, when Matt Loosen no-hit the Dunedin Blue Jays. Mahle needed 106 pitches, throwing 76 for strikes in his historic effort. It was his fifth consecutive win.

The Tortugas return to Roger Dean Stadium for the third-game of the series with RHP Keury Mella (4-5, 3.03 ERA) getting the start. He will face LHP Dillon Peters (5-3, 2.78 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM with the Chili's Pre-Game show beginning at 6:15 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.

Notes: Since 1948, it was the 18th no-hitter thrown in Daytona team history...Of the 102 pitches, 72% of them were strikes...Aquino has now hit safely in 25 of his last 29 games...Mahle is 5-0 with a 1.36 ERA in his last five starts.
