Fort Worth Flyers News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 2, 2007 ? The Fort Worth Flyers lost at home tonight to their interstate rival Austin Toros, 118-111. Led by Anthony Terrell?s 19 points, the Flyers fought hard to erase a 23-point second half deficit.

?It was a game that we played uphill from the very beginning,? head coach Sidney Moncrief said. ?Our guys - they were trying hard out there, but they just didn?t have the energy.?

Moncrief said it can be difficult to bounce back during the first half of the first game after a west-coast swing. Fort Worth went 3-1 on the trip it took last week.

In the first quarter, the Toros stayed in front for the first few possessions, but forward Jeremy Richardson tied the game at five with 9:09 to go. Fort Worth fell behind again, but picked up the advantage again with free throws by center Deji Akindele, who put the Flyers up 14-13 with 3:15 remaining. Although Austin tied the game twice thereafter, the Flyers still led at the end, 24-21.

The second quarter proved to be more difficult for the home team, which relinquished a lead that rose to 18. The Flyers struggled throughout the second, and continued to surrender baskets to the visitors. Although Fort Worth scored the last six points of the half, the team was still outscored 35-20 in the second quarter. The teams retreated to the locker room with a 56-44 Austin advantage.

?I thought at halftime ? we put some different guys in the game in the third quarter and they got the energy level up, we kept it up,? Moncrief said. ?But when you?re playing from 20-plus points down, it?s hard to win a game.?

The Toros continued their chokehold on the Flyers into the third quarter. Fort Worth notched 28 points in the quarter, but still couldn?t hold back Austin. The Toros got their largest lead at 85-62 with 2:41 to go. Thanks to forwards Terrance Thomas and Anthony Terrell, the Flyers shaved some points off the lead; Austin led 90-72 at the buzzer.

In the final quarter, Fort Worth made a final push to win, buckling down on defense and getting its shots to fall. The Flyers came within 107-102 with 1:54 after a lay in by guard Curtis Stinson. At the 1:13 mark, with the Toros up 111-102, a barrage of free throws by both teams sealed the game. Minus a jump shot by Richardson, both teams closed the game at the charity stripe. Fort Worth made a magnificent effort to come back from a 23-point deficit, but couldn?t overcome the Toros. The visiting team won 118-111.

Moncrief said the team?s defense broke down once it came within five points, and that the Flyers allowed too much middle penetration, which broke its momentum.

?But our guys just kept fighting, ? he said. ?It was a good effort ? it?s something to build upon.?

He also said bright spots in the game was the energy and effort in the fourth quarter, and that he feels good going into tomorrow night?s game.

Terrell led the Flyers with 19 points, plus seven boards and an assist. Akindele and guard Corey Santee added 16 each; Santee had two rebounds and Akindele had 12.

For the Toros, guard Cheyne Gadson led the team with 30 points, and added eight each of assists and rebounds. Guard BJ Elder had 20 points and four rebounds, and guard Troy Bell had 14 points, seven boards and three assists.
