Toronto FC Season Preview

by Rachael Mesnik
February 28, 2017 - Major League Soccer (MLS)

As the new season dawns, all eyes will be set on Toronto FC, given the team's performance last year. Toronto FC's major wins last year against the Chicago Fire, Montreal Impact and New York FC give a good foreshadowing of what we can look forward to in the 2017 season. The team's success last year is majorly attributed to the proper coaching staff, good team management and the acquisitions made by the club.

Toronto's 9th head coach, Greg Vanney, has been with the club since 2013 and saw Toronto FC to place 6th in the Eastern Conference last year. This season he will still have assistant coaches by Robin Fraser and Nick Theslof. The team's management personnel and owners contributed greatly to the success of the team by arranging each game so that fans get to experience great soccer moments in their hometown of Toronto.

Last year, Toronto FC was able to make it to the playoffs; commentators attributed that to their competitive nature. One of the major highlights of last year's season is Sebastian Giovinco's goal against the New York Red Bulls that secured Toronto FC their first playoff spot.

Some of the team's players have been nominated for the 2017 CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship; an international competition that will run from February 17th to March 5th in San José, Costa Rica. These players include: Liam Fraser, Luca Uccello, Shaan Hundal, Dante Campbell and Aidan Daniels.

Toronto FC has made some major acquisitions that will be an added advantage to the club. They announced on February 10th, 2017 that the club has signed goalkeeper Angelo Cavalluzzo to a USL contract. Since last year, the club has also made significant changes in management, which is expected to have a positive impact on the team's performance this season. The Vegas odds are expected to be on the higher end of the scale this year given that since last year they have greatly improved and became the first Canadian team to make it to the MLC cup finals.

Toronto FC announced the schedule for all 34 regular season matches, along with the kick-off times for all matches this season. The team kicks off their 11th season on Saturday, March 4th, 2017 in a match against Real Salt Lake at the Rio Tinto Stadium. This new season comes with many expectations from all Toronto FC fans and with the high Vegas odds placed on them given the new acquisitions and great coaching staff, they are hoping for a very successful year.
