Toles, Bierman Lead Hot Rods to Series Split

April 7, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

South Bend, IN - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (2-2) used the clutch hitting of Andrew Toles and six South Bend Silver Hawks (2-2) errors to win 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium. Lefty starter Sean Bierman blanked the Silver Hawks in his five frames, leading the Hot Rods to a split of the four-game series.

Tommy Coyle was single-handedly responsible for scoring the first run of the game for the Hot Rods. After his one-out blooper fell in to left-center field, Coyle aggressively stretched what looked to be a one-base hit into a double. He then stole third base and came in to score as South Bend catcher Ronnie Freeman delivered a throw that ended up in left field.

Solid base running delivered the Hot Rods their second run of the game as well. Joey Rickard walked with one-out and subsequently stole second base. After Coyle's groundout moved him to third base, Rickard scored when South Bend first baseman Frazier Hall booted an Andrew Toles-hit ground ball with two outs. Toles was then able to supply Bowling Green's third run of the game when he drove home Ben Kline with two outs in the top of the fifth.

The Bowling Green offense added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning on another Toles two-out RBI-single and South Bend error. The Silver Hawks committed six errors in all on the day, three of which contributed to Hot Rods runs.

The five runs were plenty for Hot Rods pitching, who hurled their first shutout of the young 2013 season. In his first start of 2013, Sean Bierman surrendered just one hit in five innings. The Hot Rods bullpen was able to pick up where Bierman left off as Reinaldo Lopez and Shay Crawford hurled the final four innings of shutout baseball. South Bend did not have an at bat with runners in scoring position until the eighth inning.
