Toledo Finishes Strong in 5-2 Win over Utah

(Toledo, OH) Michael Leone scored early in the third period to break a 2-2 tie to lead the Walleye to a 5-2 win over Utah Sunday at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 24-11-1-3 and 11-5-0-1 at home. Toledo is home for three straight next weekend.

Toledo started fast for the first time on the weekend as Austin Wuthrich (9th) batted a puck out of mid-air into the Utah net just 1:03 into the first period. The power play put the Walleye up by a pair as Shane Berschbach set up Zach Nastasiuk (5th) for a deflection at 11:11.

The second period was going along for the Walleye until Utah's TJ Syner stepped out of the penalty box and beat goaltender Jeff Lerg for a shorthanded goal at 13:02. Grizzlies tied the score with a power play goal from Alex Krushelnyski two minutes and 49 seconds later.

The Walleye regained control in the third period as at 6:35 when Michael Leone sent a perfect wrist shot past Utah goaltender Mark Owuya for his 4th goal of the season. The lead returned to two goals as Tyler Sikura (10th) wristed a shot from the left circle the eluded the Utah net minder at 12:52. Tyler Maxwell put a cap on the evening with an empty net goal, his 7th of the year.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 18 of 20 shots he faced and has a record of 18-4-0-2 on the season. Shane Berschbach extended his point streak to nine consecutive games (7G, 9A) with his assist on the Nastasiuk goal. A.J. Jenks also continued his point streak to seven consecutive games (4G, 8A). Toledo out shot Utah 28-20 in the game.
