Trenton Titans News Release

Trenton, N.J. - The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, defeated the Elmira Jackals in a shoot-out, 7-6, to cap off a wild one at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton. The Titans (8-9-0-1, 17 pts) won their first shootout in two years, ending a streak of seven consecutive shoot-out losses, dating back to the start of the 2011-12 campaign.

The teams split their previous two meetings, both in Elmira earlier this season.

Elmira (9-8-1-1, 20 pts) drew first blood just four minutes into the contest, as Chaz Johnson finished a pass from Andrew Rowe to beat Niko Hovinen (9 saves, ND) on a two-on-one.

Stephen Schultz responded for the Titans, with a blast from the point on the power play that seemed to go through Jackals netminder Maxime Clermont (2-3-1-1, 33 saves). With the goal, Schultz extends his point streak to six games, recording 5 goals and two assists in that span. He now has 12 points (6G, 6A) on the season, including four power play goals. Tyler Hostetter earned the only assist, his first of three helpers in the contest.

Less than a minute later, Marcel Noebels took a pass from Kory Nagy in the slot and beat Clermont to give Trenton the first of many lead changes in the contest, putting the home team up 2-1.

The lead proved to be short lived. Elmira's Jean Bourbeau put back a rebound to tie the contest at two just 18 seconds after the Noebels goal.

Noebels was not going to be outdone, as he added his second goal of the period, finishing a rebound chance off of a Ray DiLauro shot at the 15:35 mark to reclaim the Titans lead, 3-2.

Elmira proved up to the task once again, with Andrew Rowe finding a loose puck in the slot and putting a backhander past Hovinen to tie the game, 3-3, before the end of the first. After the goal, Elmira's coach Mullins was assessed a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and a game misconduct.

Titans' head coach Vince Williams made a goaltending change to start the second, bringing in Scott Wedgewood (6-5, 19 saves) to relieve Hovinen.

It was Elmira's turn to reclaim the lead early in the second. It took the league's top power play just 20 seconds to click as Louie Caporusso scored his third of the year to make it 4-3 with Kelly Zajac serving 4:00 for high sticking.

Trenton killed off the back end of the double-minor, and minutes later Noebels walked in alone on Clermont, launching a wrister from the bottom of the circle that dribbled through the Elmira netminder, earning the hat trick and tying the game once again, this time at 4-4. Noebels finished the night with four points, snapping a 9 game pointless streak. He earned Ace Hardware "First Ace" honors for his performance.

Andy Bombach added another power play goal for Trenton with five minutes left in the second, scoring just five seconds into the man-advantage, sending Trenton to the locker room with a 5-4 lead. Jacob Drewiske and Zajac added assists on Bombach's ninth of the season. It was Zajac's first point as a Titan, in his first game as a Titan.

The Jackals came out swinging in the third, as Jean Bourbeau notched his second goal of the game just 45 seconds into the final frame.

Minutes later, the Titans' Justin Taylor redirected a pass from Noebels past Clermont to put Trenton ahead, 6-5. Taylor now has two goals in six games as a Titan. Taylor's tally gave the Titans their fourth lead of the game, just to see Artem Demkov strike just 13 seconds later for the Jackals, tying the game yet again at 6-6.

The teams skated for a scoreless last 15 minutes, and another five in overtime before heading to a shoot-out still tied at six.

Trenton's Stephen Schultz beat Clermont in the third round of the shoot-out, putting a backhander over the Elmira goalkeeper's shoulder and just under the crossbar. Scott Wedgewood stopped all five Elmira chances, including making a few spectacular glove saves, to secure the win for the home team.

The Titans cashed in on 3-of-6 power play opportunities against the Jackal's penalty kill, which entered as the league's third best, while Trenton limited the league's most efficient power play to just 1-for-3.

Elmira won't have to wait long for a shot at revenge, as the two teams meet again at the Sun National Bank Center tomorrow afternoon for a 3:05 pm showdown. Tickets are still available by calling (609) 341-1100 or stopping by the box office. As always, the game can be heard on 107.7 The Bronc FM, or 1077thebronc.com with Daryle "The Bronc" Dobos, voice of the Titans.
