Everett Silvertips News Release

LANGLEY, British Columbia. - David Tendeck made 30 saves while James Malm scored twice to lift the Vancouver Giants past the Everett Silvertips, 3-1 on Opening Night of the 2018-19 regular season in WHL play on Friday before 3,952 fans at Langley Events Centre.

The Tips dropped their season opener similar to last season, en route to the Pacific Division and Western Conference title. Dustin Wolf, making his first opening night start, made 20 saves in net and Malm scored the eventual winner with less than a minute left in the second period.

UP NEXT: Opening the Silvertips home schedule, which covers 34 games this season at Angel of the Winds Arena, is Opening Night against the Vancouver Giants on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. All fans will also witness the raising of the Silvertips sixth U.S. Division championship banner and second Western Conference championship banner to the rafters before the opening puck drop, and the first 5,000 fans at the doors will receive a collectible Silvertips magnet schedule, presented by Lamoureux Real Estate and Sound Transit.

Vancouver left winger Owen Hardy opened the season up with a goal at 7:52 off a pass from winger Davis Koch. Hardy deposited a sharp angled bid behind the back of Wolf, seconds after the Silvertips survived a two man advantage penalty kill.

Back for his second season with the Tips, Martin Fasko-Rudas answered with a power play goal at 15:01, tipped from a shot by defenseman Wyatte Wylie's off a pass from Everett captain Connor Dewar. The period capped an effective special teams stretch for the Tips, who converted their sole power play chance and killed three penalties.

Malm scored with 29 seconds remaining in the second to put the Giants up 2-1, when he hit the brakes at the right circle and finished a snap shot off the rush. Moments later, Tendeck made a sprawling save on Bryce Kindopp shortly before the period's horn, preserving the score.

Despite the Silvertips' 11-3 shots on goal leverage in the third period, Malm netted his second goal of the evening on an empty netter at 19:22, seconds after Tendeck denied Kindopp again at the goal mouth.
