Tina Charles Named 2018 Verizon WNBA All-Star

New York, NY - The WNBA unveiled its list of 22 All-Stars for Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018 and New York Liberty forward, Tina Charles, was selected-her sixth career honor, as announced by the league office Tuesday evening.

Charles has been voted to each All-Star Game played during her career, and was also dubbed a starter in 2011, 2015 and 2017.

New York's all-time leading rebounder pours in 20.1 points per game, hauls 7.1 boards per outing, raises for 0.6 rejections a contest and is knocking down 45.5-percent of her looks, 32-percent of them from distance this season.

The Queens native has led New York in scoring on 16 separate occasions this season while also spearheading the team on the glass 11 times. Moreover, the Liberty's leading scorer has registered five double-doubles this year.

In her ninth season, Charles has soared three spots on the league's all-time scoring list, surpassing Taj McWilliams-Franklin, Tangela Smith and former teammate Swin Cash, and currently slots 16 on the list amassing over 5,200 career points.

On Friday, July 27, the All-Star team captains and head coaches will meet to determine the starting lineups. The starters will be revealed that night on ESPN2 (7 p.m. ET) during a live telecast of the WNBA All-Star Welcome Reception in Minnesota. Seattle head coach Dan Hughes will lead Team Elena Delle Donne (Washington Mystics), while Phoenix head coach Sandy Brondello will guide Team Candace Parker (Los Angeles Sparks).

The All-Stars were announced tonight on ESPN's SportsCenter. Under the new All-Star Game format that replaces the traditional matchup between conferences, Delle Donne and Parker will select their respective teams from the pool of remaining All-Stars to form two 11-player rosters. Delle Donne will make the first pick and Parker will have the second pick. The two captains will then alternate picks until all players have been selected.

For the first time, All-Stars were selected without regard for conference affiliation. Fans accounted for 40 percent of the vote, while current players, current head coaches and a media panel accounted for 20 percent each. Players were not allowed to vote for their teammates. Head coaches could not vote for players on their own team.

After all votes were tallied, players were ranked by position (guard and frontcourt) within each voting group - fan votes, player votes, coach votes and media votes. Each player's score was calculated by averaging her weighted rank applied to the respective voting groups. The nine guards and 13 frontcourt players with the best scores were named to compete in Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018.

Charles and the New York Liberty return to action on July 19 to take on the Atlanta Dream at 7:00 PM (EST) at McCamish Pavilion.
