Tigers Shutout by Rockets

Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB - The Medicine Hat Tigers had a tough task ahead of them on Saturday night when they faced off against the defending WHL Champion Kelowna Rockets. The Rockets headed into the night as the Western Conference's best team, while the Tiger were in the midst of a 2 game slide.

Kelowna came out with lots of jump on the Tabbies as the West's best team handed 19 shots in the opening frame as Nick Schneider got the start in net. Medicine Hat would get 4 shots on net on Michael Herringer, who was making his 7th straight start. It was one of Kelowna's rookies who made the first impact scoring his first career WHL goal, Brayden Chizen score 5 minutes into the period to open the scoring in front of 5400+ fans at Prospera Place. Just past the midway point in the period Justin Kirkland would score his 18th of the year to extend the lead heading into the intermission.

In the second period, Medicine Hat's offense just could not solve Herringer and the Rockets defense, just getting another 4 shots on net in over 38 minutes of action. The best chance for the Tigers came via Caleb Fantillo who found a hole on Herringer but hit his red friend, the cross bar, got in the way, keeping the game 2-0. Rockets leading scorer Tyson Baillie would pot his 28th of the season just before the midway point of the period, as Chizen got his second career point on the play. Calvin Thurkauf scored on the power play before the period would end for Kelowna to give the home side a 4-0 advantage after 40 minutes.

The third period was an even showing as the shots were 10-6 for Kelowna. Medicine Hat would unfortunately not be able to find the back of the net on 16 shots and dropped their 3rd straight game. However, it was a good road period for the Tigers as they continue their road trip Monday night against the Prince George Cougars.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:

1. BRAYDEN CHIZEN - KEL - (1G, 1A)

2. JUSTIN KIRKLAND - KEL - (1G, 1A)

3. MICHAEL HERRINGER - KEL - (16 SAVES, SO, W)

Medicine Hat continues their road trip against the Prince George Cougars on Monday night to cap off their final trip to the West Coast.
