Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - The Medicine Hat Tigers continue to make things difficult for the Edmonton Oil Kings as they found themselves picking up a big 4-3 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday night.
The game did not start the way the Tabbies were hoping for as they once again gave up an early lead, very similar to the game last Saturday against the Swift Current Broncos. Nick Schneider got the start but couldn't do anything about a Austin Glover shot which opened the scoring on the power play with his 10th of the season. Moments later Jesse Lees skated around the entire zone and found the top corner for his 21st of the season and a 2-0 Raiders lead. Prince Albert would add another one in the period, however Chad Butcher started the Tigers comeback with his 25th of the season and first goal on the power play to cut into the lead 3-1 heading into the intermission.
In the second period, majority of the action was played in the neutral zone as both clubs played a good defensive game. The best chance came via the Tigers' Caleb Fantillo who was found in the middle of the ice, but was stopped by Raiders netminder Ian Scott, who was making his 2nd straight start in goal. Fantillo along with fellow rookies James Hamblin and Tyler Preziuso made up the kids line on this night, which ignited lots of energy into the Tigers squad. There would be no goals in the period as we stayed at the 3-1 score for the visitors.
The third period was all Tigers as they seemed to take advantage of a sluggish Raiders squad who played last night in Red Deer. Medicine Hat came in waves, putting the puck on net at any chance they could. Medicine Hat could have reached the 50 shot plateau on the night but the Raiders did a good job of shot blocking down the stretch to keep Medicine Hat off the board.
Prince Albert would get into some late penalty trouble and the 5th ranked power play at home took advantage as Butcher doubled his power play goal total on the night with his 26th of the season as a high shot went off a Raiders defenseman and into the gaping cage. A second Raiders penalty would put the Tigers back onto the power play. Steven Owre was the quarterback as he and Butcher played catch at the line. Owre threw the puck on net and Zach Fischer scored just his 4th of the season with the deflection to tie the game at 3.
Many of the Medicine Hat faithful thought the game was headed to overtime but Owre had other plans when he drove the net and spun a backhand shot on net. The puck bounced off a Raiders defender once again to give the Tabbies the lead with only 1:40 left. Nick Schneider and the veterans of the Tigers held off the Raiders late attack and Medicine Hat gained a much needed 2 points.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
1. CHAD BUTCHER - MH - (2G, 2A)
2. JESSE LEES - PA - (1G)
3. STEVEN OWRE - MH - (1G, 2A)
Medicine Hat now has a crucial 3 games in 3 nights stretch this weekend starting in Cranbrook against the Kootenay Ice.
