Tigers Fall 3-1 to Spikes

NORWICH- CT - The Connecticut Tigers (15-9) lost Monday night, 3-1, to the State College Spikes (18-6, affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Tigers only managed five hits on the night against the team with the best record in the New York-Penn League.

The Spikes broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Soto, Dylan Tice struck an RBI double over the head of Tigers left fielder Cole Bauml to start the scoring for State College. Jeremy Martinez made it 2-0 Spikes after his sacrifice fly to right field plating Tice from third.

The Spikes added to the lead in the fifth, Jose Martinez delivered an RBI single past the outstretched glove of Daniel Pinero and gave the Spikes a 3-0 advantage.

The Tigers responded with a run of their own in the fifth, Tanner Donnels struck a two-out RBI single to bring Connecticut within two. For Donnels, that is his fifth RBI in the last six games for Connecticut.

Ronnie Williams was impressive for the Spikes, working seven innings, allowing one run on just five hits. For Williams, it is his fourth straight start that he has gone at least seven innings.

The Tigers put up their best threat in the sixth inning against Williams when the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs for Josh Lester. Lester ended up grounding out to short to end the rally.

Gregory Soto made his fifth start of the year and got off to a splendid start tonight, tossing three scoreless innings to open the ballgame. But a couple runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, ended the night for Soto.

The bullpen was spectacular again for the Tigers tonight with four scoreless innings. John Schreiber got it started retiring all six hitters he faced in his two inning stint. Zac Houston got into a bit of trouble in his appearance but stranded the bases loaded in the seventh with a couple strikeouts. In total Houston struck out four batters in his two inning performance.

The Tigers are back at it tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. against the State College Spikes. Austin Sodders gets the nod for the Tigers in the middle game of the series.
