With two outs the Tigers received a two-run double from Austin Athmann, his second of the night, to get it to a 6-3 deficit. Danny Pinero followed with an RBI single to make it 6-4 Yankees.
The Yankees would punch back again with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to lead 8-4. The Tigers would not go away as in the eighth inning, Athmann and Pinero singled to set up Josh Lester for a three-run homer to bring the Tigers within a run, trailing 8-7.
The Yankees though would plate two more runs in the eighth and close things out in the ninth to win game one of this critical series.
