Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - When the Brandon Wheat Kings hit the ice in Medicine Hat this weekend, it will mark the second straight season that the two teams have faced off in the Western Hockey League playoffs.

Led by the likes of Chad Butcher and David Quenneville, the 51-20-1 Tigers swept the short staffed Wheat Kings in last year's Eastern Conference Quarterfinlas.

2017 was the first between the two in six years and marked the second straight series win for the Tigers, who defeated Brandon four games to two in 2011.

Medicine Hat also defeated Brandon in 2004 and in a best of five opening round series in 1993.

Led by the likes of Brayden Schenn, Matt Calvert and Scott Glennie, the Wheat Kings swept the Tigers four games to nothing in a best of seven EasternConference Semi-Final in 2009.

Overall, Medicine Hat has won fifteen of 23 playoff games played between the two.

The Tigers, who compiled a 36-28-8-0 record during the regular season are coming off back to back Central Division titles but lost three of four games to the Wheat Kings during the regular season.

All four games played between the two were settled in overtime.

Carolina Hurricanes' prospect Stelio Mattheos led Brandon in scoring against the Tigers with five goals and nine points while Evan Weinger finished the year with three goals and five points in the 4-game season series.

The Wheat Kings, who enter the playoffs with the third best home ice record in the league at 27-6-2-1, will be forced to play their first round home games in Dauphin, due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair occupying Brandon's Keystone Centre next week.

Winners of seven of their last ten regular season home games, Brandon finished fourth in a very competitive Eastern Division this year with an impressive 40-27-3-2 record.

Netminder Logan Thompson, who missed the last week of the regular season, was 2-1-0 with an 0.912 save percentage in three games against Medicine Hat. Overall, the 20-year old Calgary product finished 13th in the WHL with a .908 save percentage, seventh in wins with 29 and fifth in shutouts (3).

Medicine Hat will host games one and two of the series this Friday and Sunday nights, before the series shifts to Dauphin's Credit Union Place for games three and four on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 27th and 28th.

Tickets to both games in Dauphin are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
