Norfolk Tides News Release

Jair Jurrjens and three relievers combined to hold Toledo to six hits as the Tides edged the Mud Hens 2-1 in front of a season-high crowd of 9,045 Saturday night at Harbor Park.

Jurrjens (2-1) turned in his fourth Quality Start in five outings with the Tides to help Norfolk earn the win in the opener of the four-game series. Jurrjens walked two and tied his season-high with seven strikeouts, throwing 64 of his 101 pitches for strikes. The only run the Mud Hens could muster against him came in the fifth inning, when Brandon Douglas singled, stole second and scored on a two-out bloop single by Quintin Berry.

Daniel Schlereth, Manny Delcarmen and Jairo Asencio worked the final 2.2 innings to protect the lead, with Asencio pitching a perfect ninth to register his seventh save of the season.

The Tides jumped out to a quick start against Ramon Garcia (0-1), as Jason Pridie opened up the first inning with a double to right field. One out later, Russ Canzler hit a slow grounder to third baseman Kevin Russo, whose barehanded throw sailed wide of first base and allowed Pridie to score from third.

Norfolk added to its lead in the fourth frame, as Yamaico Navarro belted a 3-0 pitch over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.

With the win, Norfolk (14-9) moved a season-high five games over the .500 mark and pulled within a game of first place Durham in the IL South division.

The two clubs will continue their series on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 1:05. Freddy Garcia (3-0, 2.81) is slated to take the mound for Norfolk against southpaw Jose Alvarez (1-1, 1.80).
