Tides Split Doubleheader with Buffalo

April 26, 2017 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The Norfolk Tides split a doubleheader with the Buffalo Bisons Wednesday night at Harbor Park, winning game one 4-0 before being edged 2-1 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Chris Lee combined with Jimmy Yacabonis on a five-hit performance to pitch the Tides to the shutout victory.

Lee (1-1) was spectacular in earning his first Triple-A victory, as he allowed just five hits over six-plus innings of work. He walked one and struck out four and needed just 67 pitches to navigate his outing, facing only four batters over the minimum. The 24-year-old left-hander, the #7 prospect in the Orioles system according to MLB.com, was relieved by Yacabonis after allowing a leadoff single in the seventh, with Yacabonis retiring all three batters he faced to finish the shutout bid.

Lee is now 1-0 with a 2.02 ERA (3 ER, 13.1 IP) over his last three starts.

David Washington's two-run home run - a long shot over the Tides bullpen in right field - paced Norfolk's offense in the first game of the twinbill. Washington, who led Cardinals minor leaguers with 30 home runs last season, has now hit .333 (8-24) with two home runs and three RBI in eight games at Harbor Park this season.

In the nightcap, Henry Urrutia provided Norfolk's lone run with his first home run of the season, but Jarrett Grube (2-1) and Jeff Beliveau combined to allow four hits in a 2-1 Bisons victory.

Urrutia, who doubled and scored a run in the opener, hit an opposite-field home run to lead off the sixth inning. He has now hit safely in four straight games - over which he's batted .462 (6-13) with two doubles, a home run and four runs scored.

Zach Stewart (0-2) took the tough-luck loss in the nightcap, as he allowed one run on three hits over 4.0 innings of a spot start. He walked two and struck out a pair, throwing 32 of his 46 pitches for strikes.

The two teams will conclude their season series with another doubleheader on Thursday at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 12:05. In game one, Norfolk will start RHP Mike Wright (0-2, 6.62), while Buffalo will counter with right-hander Mike Bolsinger (0-1, 2.45). In game two, Buffalo will start LHP Chad Girodo (0-0, 2.89), while the Tides starter is yet to be announced.

Notes: Earlier Tuesday, LHP Richard Bleier was activated from the disabled list, taking the roster spot of LHP Paul Fry, who was recalled to Baltimore Tuesday...Because the doubleheader was a result of a rainout in Buffalo last week, Norfolk served as the visiting team in game two of the twinbill...Chance Sisco doubled and singled in the opener, upping his average to .325 (13-40) over his last 11 games...Both games of the doubleheader were played in under two hours, with game one taking one hour and 32 minutes and game two being played in one hour and 58 minutes.
