Tides have no Problem with Gwinnett 13-0

July 3, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk used an eight-run fourth inning and an impressive outing by Jake Pettit to cruise past the Gwinnett Braves 13-0 in front of 9,515 fans at Harbor Park Wednesday night.

The Tides tallied single runs in the first three frames against Joe Bisenius (2-1) before sending 13 men to the plate in the eight-run fourth. Yamaico Navarro had two hits and two RBI in the inning, while Xavier Avery and Jason Pridie each added run-scoring doubles. Norfolk scored each of its eight runs with two outs in the inning against Bisenius and former Tide Cole McCurry.

Avery finished a home run short of the cycle, as he, Navarro and Russ Canzler each had three hits in the contest. L.J. Hoes also added two hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in as the Tides wrapped up their eight-game homestand with a 6-2 record.

The offense was more than enough for Jake Pettit (3-1), who took a perfect game into the fifth inning before surrendering a leadoff walk to Brandon Boggs and a one-out single to Luis Nunez. Pettit allowed just two hits over his seven innings of work, striking out six while walking one. The 26-year-old southpaw, who was promoted to Norfolk from Double-A Bowie earlier Wednesday, threw 53 of his 87 pitches for strikes.

The 13-run margin of victory matched a season high, previously set in a 14-1 win at Syracuse on May 12.

The Tides will begin a three-city, eight-game road trip Thursday night as they travel to Durham for a 6:05 contest with the Bulls. Jair Jurrjens (5-5, 4.06) will take the mound for Norfolk against right-hander J.D. Martin (9-4, 3.22).
