Tides Fall to IronPigs, 6-4

Norfolk Tides News Release

Lehigh Valley plated four sixth inning runs to rally past the Tides 6-4 Monday night at Harbor Park.

With the Tides leading 4-2, the IronPigs put the first three batters of the sixth inning on against reliever Mike Hinckley before Zach Clark (0-2) was summoned from the Tides bullpen with the bases loaded and nobody out. Clark induced a double play grounder off the bat of Neil Sellers that plated a run before Paul Hoover worked a walk to put runners on first and third. Brian Bocock then followed with a two-run triple off the left-center field wall to give Lehigh Valley the lead before Rich Thompson lined an RBI single into centerfield to put the IronPigs up 6-4.

The IronPigs rally wasted a solid effort by Tides starter Brad Bergesen, who yielded two runs on five hits and a walk in five innings of work. Pitching on short rest, Bergesen struck out four and threw 58 of his 85 pitches for strikes. He retired the first eight batters of the contest before three straight singles in the third inning plated a run.

Brian Gordon (1-1) earned the win with three shutout innings of relief before giving way to Ryan Vogelsong, who struck out three over the final two frames to register his first save of the season.

Josh Bell had two doubles and an RBI to lead the Tides offense, while Rhyne Hughes added a two-run double in a three-run first inning. Jeff Salazar and Robert Andino each had two hits, while Nolan Reimold singled to extend his hitting streak to five games.

The two clubs combined for nine stolen bases in the contest, as Lehigh Valley swiped five and Norfolk stole four.

The Tides and IronPigs will continue their four-game series Tuesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:15. Tim Bascom (0-2, 5.40) will take the mound for Norfolk against left-hander Brian Mazone (4-6, 3.67).

Tuesday is Turn-Back-The-Clock Night at Harbor Park, with 50-cent Coca-Cola products, Gwaltney hot dogs and popcorn. Norfolk will also wear throwback uniforms, matching those worn by the Tidewater Tides in 1969, Norfolk's first year in the International League.
