Tides fall to Braves

Norfolk Tides News Release

Val Majewski slugged a two-run home run, but a six-run second inning was too much for the Tides to overcome in a 7-5 loss to the Richmond Braves in front of a season-high 12,653 fans at Harbor Park Saturday night.

After Norfolk starter Hayden Penn (2-1) retired the Braves in order in the first inning, the 22-year-old right-hander ran into trouble in the second. Richmond collected six hits in the frame - including two-run singles by Iker Franco and Brandon Jones - as the Braves sent 10 men to the plate and jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

Norfolk cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, as the Tides batted around. Cesar Crespo drove home Terry Tiffee and Jason Dubois with an RBI single, and Travis Brown followed with an RBI single of his own to plate Alberto Castillo, pulling the Tides within 6-3.

The Tides trimmed the lead to one in the third inning, as Tiffee led off the frame with a single and scored one batter later on a long home run to right-center field off the bat of Majewski.

After Majewski's homer, Norfolk put runners at the corners in the third frame, but Travis Brown grounded out to short to end the threat with the Tides trailing 6-5.

After the third inning, five different Richmond relievers combined to hold the Tides hitless, holding Norfolk to just a walk and two hit batters.

Buddy Hernandez (9-3) earned the win for the Braves with two scoreless innings of relief, while Joey Devine picked up his fourth save of the season with a hitless 9th inning.

Penn allowed seven runs on ten hits, walking two and striking out five in five innings of work. He threw 90 pitches in the contest, 57 of which were strikes.

Norfolk will conclude their 2007 schedule with afternoon contests in Richmond on Sunday and Monday. Tim Kester (9-9, 5.03) will take the hill for the Tides on Sunday against R-Braves southpaw Francisley Bueno (1-0, 3.00), with first pitch from The Diamond at 2:00 p.m.
