Thurman Shuts Out Barnstormers

July 3, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers may have been wearing Hawaiian-style jerseys on Friday evening but facing Corey Thurman was hardly a day at the beach.

The York right-hander shutdown Lancaster on three singles over seven innings, pitching the Revolution to a 4-0 win over the Barnstormers in front of 4,798 Friday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the victory, York closed the gap in the War of the Roses to 6-2 in favor of Lancaster.

Lancaster's only threat against Thurman (4-3) came in the second inning when Jed Morris grounded a single through the right side, and Aaron Herr followed with a line drive single into center. Morris took third on Ryan Mulhern's fly ball to right, but the potential uprising died there as Thurman fanned Michael Campbell and retired Bryan Sabatella on a fly ball to center.

The Barnstormers managed to advance only one other runner as far as second base in the game. Campbell lined a single to right leading off the fifth and moved to second on a one-out balk. Thurman retired every other batter in the inning on a harmless fly ball to right field.

In fact, the York outfielders recorded 11 putouts behind Thurman on the night.

Jason Scobie (3-4) matched Thurman's run of scoreless innings through five but could not escape the sixth undamaged. Carl Loadenthal lined a single to center leading off the inning and stole second. P.J. Rose moved him to third with a line drive that deflected off Scobie's glove and rolled to second baseman David Housel for the second out of the inning. Loadenthal scored on Tom Collaro's slow roller up the third base line, beating Lloyd Turner's throw home. Jason Aspito kept the inning going with a single to right, and Scobie loaded the bases by hitting Matt Esquivel. Matt Padgett's chopper to second scored one more, and Aspito crossed the plate when Turner threw wide of first base on a grounder by Jason Johnson.

Matt Rogelstad chipped in with a homer leading off the seventh, his second for the Revs.

The series continues Saturday evening with a 6:35 start. Fireworks, presented by Kellogg's, will follow the game. Lancaster will start lefty Zack Parker (0-1), and York will counter with right-hander Tim Harikkala (3-1). Tickets for the game are available at the box office and through www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.

NOTES: Lancaster was shut out for the fifth time this season and second time within the last week...Barnstormers opponents played error-free baseball for the seventh consecutive game...Trey Hodges pitched the ninth inning, seeing his first action since May 22.
