Evansville Thunderbolts News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - Evansville took on Fayetteville in their fifth and final meeting of the season on Saturday, falling 5-4 in the shootout after a near miraculous late comeback. With the win, Fayetteville continues their win streak, now sitting at eight, while Evansville has accrued at least a point in their last six games.
Dave Williams scored on a rebound on a shot from Chase Nieuwendyk off a two-on-one just three and a half minutes into the game, giving the Thunderbolts a 1-0 lead. Evan Dixon would even things up for the FireAntz nearing the end of the first after getting a fortuitous bounce off Tanner Milliron that trickled behind him and into the net. The two teams would trade goals in the middle part of the second with Jake Hauswirth scoring for the FireAntz and Dave Williams getting his second of the game, that mark coming on the powerplay.
Tayler Thompson and Joe Harcharik would then give Fayetteville a 4-2 lead with consecutive goals late in the second period. Evansville would come roaring back in the third with Austin McKay potting his third goal for the Thunderbolts midway through the period off a nice pass from behind the net from Dave Williams. Chase Nieuwendyk would complete the comeback with just 26 seconds left in the game after Tanner Milliron was pulled for the extra attacker, stuffing a rebound off the end boards into the vacant side of the net. John Scorcia and Austin McKay assisted on the play.
Evansville would push Fayetteville to a shootout after a scoreless overtime period, where Jake Hauswirth would beat Tanner Milliron for the second night in a row to ensure the win for the FireAntz. Tanner Milliron made great saves all night, 30 on 34 shots and Sean Bonar stood on his head as he turned away 45 on 49 shots. Evansville remains in tenth place as they lose ground on Columbus with the loss. Evansville will take to the road until returning home on April 7th to play the Columbus Cottonmouths in a two-game series to end the season. Tickets will be available online and at the door.
