Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- 3B Kevin Russo had 2 RBI and the go-ahead hit in the 6th inning to lead Trenton past New Hampshire 4-3 on Saturday night at Waterfront Park. Trenton has now won three games in a row, and the first two games of the three-game series against New Hampshire.
Down 2-1 in 6th inning, the Thunder scored two runs to take the lead. With one out, RF Jose Tabata reached an error by New Hampshire C Kyle Phillips. C P.J. Pilittere then singled Tabata over to third base. 3B Kevin Russo followed with a double to score Tabata with the tying run, and Pilittere with the go-ahead run as the ball was misplayed by New Hampshire CF Aaron Mathews. Russo's hit came off of New Hampshire starting pitcher Scott Richmond (3-5).
Trenton (27-15) scored an insurance run in the 7th inning on an RBI walk by Pilittere. The run proved to be monumental. In the 8th inning, the Fisher Cats loaded the bases with two outs off of Thunder reliever Michael Gardner. New Hampshire LF Ryan Patterson then delivered an infield single scoring a run. However, on the play, Phillips tried to score from second base and was thrown out at home plate by Thunder 2B Reegie Corona to preserve the one-run lead. Gardner retired the Fisher Cats in the 9th inning without giving up a run to notch his 5th save.
Thunder reliever Zach Kroenke (3-0) earned the win in relief. He tossed two scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th. Richmond took the loss as he gave up 9 H and 3 R (1 earned) in 5.1 IP. Thunder starter George Kontos earned a no-decision going 5 IP. He allowed only 3 H and 2 R and struck out 7. Thunder CF Austin Jackson and LF Colin Curtis each had 2 H in the win. The Thunder posted its 2nd biggest crowd of the season at 7,696, and has gone over the 7,000 mark in three of the first five games of this six-game homestand.
Trenton will go for the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. RHP Dan McCutchen (4-3, 2.52) will start for Trenton against RHP Brandon Magee (0-6, 6.44).
