Thunder Halts Curve Streak on Wednesday

Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE,Pa. - Stolmy Pimentel allowed six runs for a second-straight start and the Curve were unable to come all the way back in a, 6-4, loss to the Trenton Thunder on Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The loss snapped the Curve's three-game winning streak and also a seven-game win streak versus the Thunder that dates back to August of 2012.

Altoona seemed to steal some momentum back in the fifth inning when Carlos Paulino scored thanks to a Gift Ngoepe one-out single. The RBI knock pulled the Curve within one and they were right back in the game trailing, 3-2.

It seemed like it came at a perfect time as well because Pimentel (2-1) was in the midst of having set down 10 in a row since the second inning when he took the hill entering the sixth. Kyle Roller ended the streak of consecutive batters retired when he singled to start the sixth. Slade Heathcott followed with a single of his own to put two on with no one out. Neil Medchill bounced back to Pimentel but it had the same result as a bunt, which was both runners moving up a station.

Ali Castillo followed with a two-run single through a drawn-in infield and the Thunder had reclaimed a three-run lead. Ramon Flores followed two batters later with a sac fly hat put the Thunder up four, 6-2.

The Curve were able to plate a pair to inch closer in the sixth when Jarek Cunningham scored on a passed ball and Paulino tripled in Drew Maggi. Unfortunately that is where the scoring ended for the Curve as they were kept in check the rest of the night.

Pimentel finished six innings and allowed the six runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out two. Altoona received excellent bullpen work from Quinton Miller and Zack Thornton on Wednesday. Miller worked two innings and struck out four batters while allowing one hit. Thornton pitched the ninth and struck out two.

Paulino continued his hot series versus the Thunder with two more hits and another RBI on Wednesday. He has reached base six times combined in the first two games of the series. Cunningham also contributed with a multi-hit effort on Wednesday, finishing the game 2-for-3.

Looking to win a third straight series, the Curve (17-22) will host the Thunder (21-18) in the final game of the series beginning at 10:30 am. Thursday morning. It's an Education Day in Curve, Pa. as well as a Thirsty ThursdayTM presented by Rocky 104.9. Fans can get 16oz. Yuengling Lager drafts for $2 at Thursday morning's game as well as half-priced 22oz. sodas.

Scheduled to make a rehab start for the Curve on Thursday morning will be RHP Charlie Morton (1-0, 0.90), who hasn't seen game action since leaving his rehab start with Triple-A Indianapolis on May 3. He'll be opposed by Thunder LHP Matt Tracy (4-2, 7.39) in the finale.

Gates will swing open at 9:30 a.m. while airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 10 a.m. For tickets and more information on the Curve, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the ticket windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
