Thunder Assigned Kelly Czuy From Springfield

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, the proud ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League and Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League, announced today that right wing Kelly Czuy (CHOO-ee) has been assigned to the Thunder from Springfield.

Czuy increases the Thunder preseason roster to 24 players (14 forwards, 10 defensemen), who open 2009-10 Training Camp on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Stockton Arena.

Czuy, 26, was signed to an AHL contract by Springfield in 2008 and has spent the last three ECHL seasons with the Las Vegas Wranglers, scoring 70 points (31g-39a) in 133 career games with 197 penalty minutes.

Earning the nickname "The Choo Choo Train" while with the Wranglers, Czuy ranked fourth in the team's playoff scoring with 17 points (7g-10a) in 21 games in 2007-08, helping guide the Wranglers to an appearance in the Kelly Cup Finals.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound forward split last season between Las Vegas and Springfield, scoring 27 points (9g-18a) in 39 games and adding 13 points (5g-8a) in 18 postseason games which included a second straight appearance in the Conference Finals with the Wranglers. Czuy suited up in three regular season games for Springfield, collecting an assist.

Czuy, an Edmonton native who has participated in Oilers preseason training camp the last two seasons, has skated in 150 career games for Las Vegas and in the AHL with Springfield, Iowa and Manitoba, scoring 74 points (31g-43a) while notching 201 penalty minutes.

In 44 career games in the Kelly Cup Playoffs, he has scored 30 points (12g-18a) which includes a goal and two assists in the 2008 Kelly Cup Finals.

Czuy will be a part of the team that hosts "FanFest" on Sunday, Oct. 11 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Stockton Arena, where admission is free to the public.

The Thunder returns to the ice for preseason play on Thursday, Oct. 8 against the Bakersfield Condors, starting at 7:00 p.m. at Stockton Arena. The 2009-10 season, the Fifth Year Anniversary for the team, launches on Friday, Oct. 16 at Qwest Arena against the Idaho Steelheads at 6:10 p.m. and the Thunder home opener is Friday, Oct. 23 against the Ontario Reign at 7:30 p.m. at Stockton Arena.

The Thunder was voted "Best Local Sports Team" by readers of the San Joaquin Magazine, has led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew 223,854 fans to Stockton Arena in 2008-09.
