Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Threshers blasted three home run for the second-straight day, powering past the Jupiter Hammerheads by a 7-3 final in the series opener at Spectrum Field.

Emmanuel Marrero and Mark Laird knocked back-to-back solo shots to open the third inning, while Deivi Grullon 's three-run jack broke it open for the Threshers in the fifth.

Clearwater (17-8) leads the Florida State League with 26 home runs, and has held at least a share of first place for the past 21 days.

The Threshers found themselves down early on Monday, when Jupiter (11-14) loaded the bases to start the game against Seranthony Dominguez .

Dominguez (3-0) struck out Dexter Kjerstad on a fastball, but Brad Haynal followed with a sacrifice fly to plate the game's first run. John Silviano then chopped a double down the first base line to make it 2-0.

The right-hander settled in from there, holding Jupiter scoreless through his final five innings. Dominguez would give Clearwater six innings of two-run ball, permitting six hits and two walks, and striking out six on a season-high 100 pitches, 62 of which were strikes.

Down 2-0, the Threshers flipped the power switch in the third.

Marrero lifted off on a 1-1 pitch, knocking one out to right to get Clearwater on the board. The homer was Marrero's second in as many days, and his third of the season. Laird followed by pulling one over the wall in right for his first home run of the season to tie the game at two.

Zach Coppola singled to center, stole second, and moved to third when Herlis Rodriguez 's fly ball was dropped by Kjerstad in right for an error. Damek Tomscha grounded into a double play, but the Hammerheads conceded the run as Coppola crossed the plate to give Clearwater the 3-2 lead.

The Threshers opened it up with a two-out rally against Felipe Gonzalez (2-2) in the fifth.

Rodriguez kicked it off with a single to center, and Tomscha knocked one to center as well. Wilson Garcia followed with a chopper up the middle that plated Rodriguez to extend the lead to 4-2.

Grullon took a strike, then crushed the next offering, sending a three-run bomb into the bullpen beyond the wall in left to expand the lead to 7-2. The long ball for Grullon was his third of the season.

Tyler Gilbert permitted a run in the seventh, but struck out two and set the side down in order in the eighth. Jacob Waguespack took it the rest of the way, hurling a scoreless ninth.

The Threshers and Hammerheads battle it out in game two of the series on Tuesday, when Jose Taveras (3-0) takes the hill against Trevor Richards (2-2). First pitch is at 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
