Threshers Fall in Opener, 5-2 at Mets
May 26, 2017 - Florida State League (FSL1) - Clearwater Threshers News Release
The Threshers saw a three-game win streak halted on Friday, as Clearwater dropped game one at St. Lucie by a 5-2 final at First Data Field. Clearwater (27-22) now sits in second place in the FSL North, one game back of the Dunedin Blue Jays. The Mets (24-25) grabbed the early advantage with two outs in the first, when big league rehabber Yoenis Cespedes walked and Patrick Mazeika doubled him home. Edgar Garcia (1-1) kept it a 1-0 game until the fifth, when the Mets rallied for three runs. Peter Alonso opened the frame with his second home run of the season, and Arnaldo Berrios worked a one-out walk. Vinny Siena and John Mora followed with back-to-back singles, the latter of which plated a run, before Garcia exited in favor of Blake Quinn. JC Rodriguez greeted Quinn with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. St. Lucie added its final run an inning later when, with runners at the corners, the Mets pulled off a double steal with Jhoan Urena swiping home. Down 5-0, the Threshers cracked the scoreboard in the seventh. Deivi Grullon and Herlis Rodriguez got things going with a pair of singles off Joe Shaw (3-4), who struck out back-to-back batters before Drew Stankiewicz came through with a knock to center to score Grullon with Clearwater's first run. St. Lucie called upon Joshua Torres to take over in relief, and Grenny Cumana beat out an infield hit to push across Rodriguez and cut the deficit to three. Torres got Zach Coppola to ground out to end the inning. Game two of the series is set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, when Jose Taveras (4-2) toes the rubber against Andrew Church (4-3).
