Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

Batavia, NY- Sunday's finale between the Batavia Muckdogs and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers was not supposed to be special. Two teams with no postseason hopes finishing out the year. However, Scrappers pitchers Luis Gomez, Carlos Melo, and Kerry Doane made sure the game was one for the record books.

For the second time in franchise history, Mahoning Valley pitching completed a ballgame without allowing a hit, defeating Batavia by a 6-0 score. Lefty Luis Gomez got it started on the mound for the Scrappers.

Gomez walked one and hit a batter with one out in the 1st inning, but a double play got him out of the jam. He would go on to retire the next 16 batters, finishing with six no-hit innings, allowing just one walk and striking out eight Muckdogs.

Then came Carlos Melo out of the bullpen, throw two more no-hit innings, walking just one and collecting two strikeouts. Then in the 9th, Kerry Doane slammed the door shut and ensured history.

Meanwhile, the Scrappers bats were doing just as well, highlighted by a RBI single from DH James Roberts in the 1st, a homer from 3rd baseman Grant Fink in the 8th, and a RBI double from shortstop Paul Hendrix in the 9th inning.

Gomez would grab the win (1-2). Muckdogs starter Max Garner was on the hook for the loss (0-2). The Scrappers are the 10th team in New York-Penn League history to be no hit, and have a no hitter thrown against them in the same season.

The Scrappers will now travel to Auburn for the final series of the season. First pitch for Monday's game will be 7:05pm.
