Three-point night from Parkes helps Walleye past K-Wings

December 30, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Toledo, OH- After winning six straight away from Wings Stadium, the Kalamazoo Wings have now dropped two straight on the road, as the K-Wings fell 3-2 Monday night against the Toledo Walleye at the Huntington Center.

Starting the game with a flurry of scoring chances, the Walleye struck for two goals in the first 3:49 of the first period. Standing by the far post Kyle Rogers (7th) jammed in a David Gilbert centering pass 1:47 into the contest to give Toledo the early advantage.

Just over two minutes later the Walleye extended their lead with a power-play goal from Pat Mullane (2nd).

While the K-Wings power-play went 0-for-1 in the opening 20 minutes, that didn't stop their special teams from getting involved. Stealing the puck at their own blue line, Ray Kaunisto scored his first goal of the season by finishing an odd-man rush that was up by a pass from Ryan Del Monte 13:03 into the stanza. The goal was Kalamazoo's seventh shorthanded goal this season, the second-most of any team in the ECHL (Florida Everblades-9).

Kalamazoo pulled even with a breakaway tally 2:26 into the period from Yannick Veilleux (1st); however, Toledo would respond later in the frame with a highlight reel goal from Trevor Parkes (14th), which proved to be the game-winner.

The goal was Parkes third point (1 goal, 2 assists) of the night. Parkes has been a thorn to the side of the K-Wings earning eight points (4 goals, 4 assists) in three games this season.
