Three Nailers Selected To All-Star Squad

Three Wheeling Nailers including two rookies have been selected to represent the American Conference in the upcoming ECHL All-Star Game. The game will be played in Reading, Penn at the Sovereign Center on January 20, 2009.

Tommy Goebel, Nick Johnson and Rob Sirianni all got the call due to their success so far in the 2008-09 season.

The 23-year-old Johnson, who is under contract to Pittsburgh of the NHL, is tied for fourth among league rookies with 14 goals and six power-play goals and is tied for 10th with 24 points in 18 games while also playing in the AHL where he has seven points (2g-5a) in 10 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Johnson is a rookie who last year played with Dartmouth College. Johnson spent much of the season leading the ECHL in goals and power play goals prior to his call up to the AHL.

The 24-year-old Goebel, who is under contract to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL, is tied for fifth among league rookies with 17 assists and is tied for seventh with 27 points in 20 games while also playing in the AHL where he has five points (3g-2a) in nine games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Ohio State University product is in his rookie season. Goebel was ECHL player of the week from Oct 19-26 and recorded his first professional hat trick in the October 26 game vs. Trenton. He was also ECHL Player of the Month for October leading the team in scoring with 15 points (7+8) as well as plus-minus at +10.

Sirianni is tied for fourth in the league with 17 goals and is tied for ninth with 33 points (17g-16a) in 18 games while also playing in the AHL where he has one goal in six games with Binghamton and one assist in three games with Philadelphia. The Bemidji State (Minn.) University product is in his 2nd season of professional hockey after playing with the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL last year. Sirianni scored 9 goals in 6 games upon his return to the Nailers from Binghamton and was rewarded to another call up to Philadelphia. He scored his professional hat trick December 14 vs. the Reading Royals with his parents in attendance having just flown in from Edmonton.

The three all stars led the Nailers into first place heading into the New Year with a 19-5-5 mark for 43 points. If they are unable to participate in the All Star event due to obligations in the AHL then the Nailers will be able to send replacements.
