Great Lakes Loons News Release

South Bend, Indiana - The Loons socked three home runs, scored a season-high nine times and avoided a series sweep at the hands of the South Bend Cubs in a 9-4 win at Four Winds Field on Thursday.

The Great Lakes Loons (20-25) ended South Bend's six-game win streak in a series that featured nine home runs and six by the Loons. South Bend (28-17) leads the Midwest League Eastern Division and the season series between the two clubs is now split at three apiece.

Right-handed hitting outfielder Ariel Sandoval carried the Loons offense to the tune of two home runs and three RBI. His solo shot in the second inning off South Bend right-hander Adbert Alzolay (L, 4-1) helped the Loons to a 1-0 lead and his two-run bomb in the third extended the Loons' advantage to 4-1.

Sandoval is the first Loon with multiple home runs in a game since Justin Chigbogu uncorked two long balls on July 12, 2015 at Fort Wayne. Sandoval, 20 years old from Monte Plata, Dominican Republic, last hit two home runs in a game on August 15, 2015 with the Arizona League Dodgers. He finished the series against South Bend 5-for-9 with three home runs and six RBI.

South Bend tied the game in the bottom of the second between Sandoval's two home runs, but Loons lefty starter Michael Boyle (W, 4-2) allowed three total hits over three innings and quieted a potent South Bend offense that entered the day with 17 home runs in its last 16 games.

Left-handed hitting Matt Jones also enjoyed a productive afternoon. The Nebraskan's RBI double in the third broke a 1-1 tie and a line-drive home run to left in the ninth placed the Loons in front 9-4.

Right-handed reliever Alex Hermeling (S, 2) earned the save because he entered the game in the eighth with the score 7-4 Loons (a save situation).

The Loons are now 1-2 on their seven-game road trip and 6-14 on the road in 2016. The team travels to the southern-most Midwest League, the Bowling Green Hot Rods, for a four-game series that starts on Friday at 7:35 p.m. eastern. Pregame coverage on ESPN 100.9-FM is at 7:05 p.m.

The Great Lakes Loons have been a Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007 and are in their 10th season in 2016. For tickets and more information about the Loons, call 989-837-BALL or visit Loons.com.
