WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Behind five scoreless innings from Dash starter Zach Thompson and a strong showing from the bullpen, Winston-Salem eeked out a 2-1 victory over the Frederick Keys in Monday's series opener at BB&T Ballpark.

Thompson (1-1) dazzled the Keys (4-7) with an array of pitches, striking out five batters and allowing just three hits in his first home outing this season. The righty, who is ranked the 30th-best prospect in the White Sox system per MLB Pipeline, is now 3-2 with a 2.73 ERA in six starts at the Dash's home ballpark.

For the second straight game, Winston-Salem's relief corps shined. Ian Hamilton picked up his first save of the year, twirling two scoreless frames and escaping a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the ninth. The former Washington State Cougar has not allowed an earned run in his first seven innings of work at the High-A level. Meanwhile, Aaron Bummer threw two solid innings of middle relief, with his lone blemish being a Yermin Mercedes solo home run in the seventh.

In a game where both teams combined to post nine hits, Winston-Salem (4-8) struck in the first with an unearned run against Frederick starter Keegan Akin (0-2). Leading off the inning, Jake Fincher reached on a throwing error by Keys shortstop Ryan Mountcastle. After stealing second, Fincher moved to third on a Ronald Bueno single. Zack Collins followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Dash a 1-0 edge.

In the third, Danny Mendick helped Winston-Salem add on to its advantage with a leadoff triple. With Bueno at the plate and one out, Akin uncorked a wild pitch to allow Mendick to score. Akin ultimately went 4.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs (one unearned).

The aforementioned Bueno was the only member of the Dash with a two-hit night. The 24-year-old is now 4-for-6 in his last two games.

Winston-Salem continues its three-game series at BB&T Ballpark against Frederick on Tuesday. The Dash send righty Brannon Easterling (1-1, 4.50 ERA) to the bump against Keys right-hander Cody Sedlock (1-0, 2.45 ERA).
