ROYALS PRE-GAME NOTES -

Tonight, the Royals face the Norfolk Admirals in the back-end of a two-game set at The Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. Last night, the Admirals knocked off the Royals, 6-1, in the weekend opener. o

Tonight's game is the seventh in what will be a total of eleven games between the two teams this season. So far, Reading and Norfolk have split the season series with the next matchup scheduled for Friday, March 31, at Santander Arena in Reading (@ 7:00 pm). o

The final three games-and four of the final six-for the Royals in the 2016-17 regular season will be against the Admirals. o

Last night's loss for the Royals marked Reading's first regulation loss in team history in seven total games played here at The Scope Arena (5-1-0-1). So far, this year the Royals have gone 2-1-0-0 in Norfolk with three more games (including tonight's matchup) here at The Scope, which includes the final two games of the regular season (April 7 and April 8).

In Norfolk's 6-1 victory over Reading last night, the Admirals scored first and built a 3-0 lead before the Royals were able to break through with Justin Crandall's eighteenth goal of the season 13:07 into the second period.

Undaunted, Norfolk not only rebuilt the three goal advantage before the conclusion of the second period (4-1), the Admirals closed out the game with a pair to hand Reading the team's most lopsided loss of the year.

Last night's loss served to snap a five game unbeaten streak for the Royals-as well as a four game unbeaten streak on the road. The loss also dropped the Royals' record back to fourteen games over .500 (36-22-2-2=76), although Reading did hold onto first place in the North Division despite the loss.

The five goal differential in last night's 6-1 loss suffered by the Royals was the team's largest margin of defeat in the 2016-17 regular season.

With last night's loss to Norfolk, Reading's record fell to 5-10-0-0 against teams in the South Division with five more games to be played against the South-all against Norfolk.

Last night's game marked the sixth time this season that Reading has allowed six goals (or more against) (0-5-1-0).

The Royals were held to a season-low one goal last night for the ninth time (0-9-0-0). Two of those games have been against Norfolk. (The Admirals defeated the Royals, 2-1, at Santander Arena in Reading on February 11.)

Each of the two teams was credited with thirty-eight shots on goal in last night's game. That marked the seventh time this season that Reading and the team's opponent have had an equal number of shots (4-3-0-0). o

The Royals are currently fifth in the ECHL, averaging 33.56 shots on goal per game. o

After last night's game, Reading's overall shooting percentage fell to 10.8% (225 goals on 2082 shots). As late as mid-February-through fifty games-the Royals' shooting percentage was as high as 11.6%.

Reading's power play was held off the board (0-2) for the fifth time in the last six games (1 - 24) (4.2%). In the last eleven games, the Royals PP has gone 3 for 42 (7.1%); and 5 for 67 (7.5%) in the last seventeen games.

The Royals penalty kill knocked off all three power play chances for the Admirals last night. Reading's PK has killed fourteen straight PP chances for the opposition over the last three games-and in the last eight games have killed 21 of the last 23 PP chances (91.3%).

Justin Crandall scored the lone goal for Reading last night. That was the eighteenth goal of the year for Crandall, who has scored in back-to-back games for the first time since scoring in consecutive games against the Cincinnati Cyclones on November 26 and 27. o

That was the personal season-high eighteenth goal the year for Crandall, who scored seventeen for the Royals in his rookie season (2015-16) (17g-38a=55pts in 54 games).

Robbie Czarnik, who leads the Royals with 52 points (22g-30a) extended his personal point streak to four games (3g-2a=5pts), when he was credited with the lone assist on Crandall's goal last night.

Last night's game marked the second time this season that goaltender Martin Ouellette was touched up for six goals against. He also gave up six in Reading's 6-3 loss to Greenville on February 26. Last night's loss snapped a two-game win streak for Ouellette, who's record fell to 14-12-0-1 (2.81 gaa) (.908 save percentage).
